Your role in the Team
There are broadly 4 areas of tax at IG, Corporate, Client, Employment and Indirect taxes and this role will have opportunities to support all of them, however will have a focus on Client taxes. There are vast amounts of data that require sense checking, manipulating and configuring into tax authority friendly formats. A successful candidate will also have the ability to adapt and improve the existing tax processes. The tax function reports directly to the CFO and consists of the Group Head of Tax, Head of Indirect Tax, 3 Senior Tax Managers, and 2 Tax Managers. This role will have day to day reporting responsibilities to London based Senior Managers.
What you’ll do
The role will primarily be focused on Operational tax compliance and will involve:
- Assisting with US withholding tax obligations relating to IG’s Qualified Intermediary (QI) and Qualified Derivatives Dealer (QDD) statuses. Where a client trades a US stock or US underlying (for leverage products) and that stock issues a dividend, US withholding tax applies. IG subsidiaries have been granted QI/QDD status from the US tax authorities which allows us to provide preferential tax treaty rates on these dividends if the correct onboarding documentation is collected. With this status comes additional tax reporting. Your role will involve ensuring the correct KYC processes are in place to then prepare Group wide tax calculations, payments and returns for all QDD and QI related matters (Form 1042, Form 1042-S, Form 1099, Form 945, Form 7004, Form 8809 and 871m payments)
- Assisting with Group wide AEOI reporting obligations (FATCA/CRS). FATCA and CRS were rules were designed to prevent clients hiding their assets offshore. Several countries have entered into a regime where companies like IG will have to exchange information about their clients to the tax authorities. For example, a client may open account with IG in one country (say the UK) but be tax resident of another country (say the US), we will have to report this UK client to the US tax authorities as having an account with IG UK. The role will therefore involve extracting and cleansing IG client trading data to report to the tax authorities. You will also have to liaise with local stakeholders.
- Preparing monthly/annual tax calculations, payments and tax returns to the Italian authorities. This includes a) Financial Transaction Taxes which is a tax charged when any client trades leverage products over the Italian 40 index and large Italian stocks, b) Capital Gains Tax which is charged to Italian resident clients trading IG Products who make a gain on their investments and c) Wealth tax which is a tax payable by Italian residents who hold financial assets outside of Italy.
- Preparing UK ISA returns to HMRC. The UK ‘Individual Savings Account’ is a tax free wrapper where UK resident clients can trade stocks and shares free of UK income and CGT. We need to tell HMRC who these clients are and how much they have in their accounts with us.
- Issuing German tax statements to clients annually, ensuring compliance with changing tax rules. German withholding tax rules apply to German resident clients contracted with our German broker. The tax rules in this space are constantly evolving and the role will include implementing changes when required.
- Ensuring correct documentation from a customer perspective is in place for all the above
- Review and ongoing maintenance/updating of current processes and procedures
- Assisting with ad-hoc projects and implementation of business initiatives where required including the operational tax implications of launching new financial products and setting up new business overseas. This includes liaising with local advisers to pitch requirements to business.
- Liaising with IT to build systems to capture relevant logic to calculate operational taxes such as FTT or CGT
- Operational tax Governance. Operational taxes involves a number of teams around the business from KYC, to Dealers, Corporate Actions and finance. The role will involve liaising with all the business stakeholders to ensure they understand their involvement with respect to operational taxes.
You will also get the opportunity to support other areas of tax including:
- Assisting with preparing transfer pricing documentation.
- First line monitoring and maintenance of the global compliance tracker, keeping the team updated with upcoming deadlines for tax returns/payments and dealing directly with 3rd party advisors.
